Skilled workers for the crafts business of tomorrow
Whether you’re Google or a newborn startup, you’re going to need to onboard employees. Doing so efficiently and without wasting internal time and manpower, however, is easier said than done.
This is an issue Montamo knows all too well. While only founded in November 2023, Montamo has already managed to train up a whole hoard of skilled workers – since February alone, they’ve onboarded 50 new employees. That’s 50 new people within just six months.
Technical employee onboarding is typically a manual task. First the devices themselves have to be ordered, then set up with the correct software. Before the new joiner starts, all their user accounts need to be created. Plus, these tasks are normally carried out by someone without a technical background, meaning if there are any issues along the way, it’s difficult and timely to resolve them.
That’s not the end. Once the new joiners are onboarded, there’s the ongoing administration of their devices, ensuring everything is running compliantly and the employee has access to necessary software.
As you can imagine, with 50 new employees within six months, this kind of process is simply unviable for Montamo.
Jan Köstlin, their team lead for business systems and information, explains how cumbersome this can be. Previous to Montamo, he was working in a startup where “we didn't work with deeploi and had to do our hardware and systems administrations ourselves. That is really painful because it is not our main goal.” The onboarding process would take them two to three hours per employee. That’s bad news for growing companies, where these tasks often stand in the way of other priorities.
That’s why for Montamo, it was paramount to alleviate this burden. “The most important thing was that we wanted to take care of the core business, not all these administration things regarding hardware, or handing over smartphones and who has what software downloaded,” explains Jan. “This becomes very easy to handle with all the settings we have in deeploi.”
Overcoming the pain
When it comes to onboarding with deeploi, Jan tells us that “in the best case it now only takes five minutes”, maximum 15. If you compare that with the two hours typically needed to onboard manually, and consider the 50 employees Montamo trained since February, you’re looking at a time saving of 95+ hours.
That excludes, of course, any tasks that happen before the employee starts. With every new employee needing an iPhone, the device ordering process has been particularly useful for Montamo. “The whole ordering process is super easy and super fast. We really only have to fill out the form saying what we need at what time, plus what kind of person needs which access.” Everything else is then handled on deeploi’s side.
Once the new employee starts, all it takes is a quick explanation of what they should use deeploi for. Then they’re able to raise any tech issues they have directly via deeploi’s ticketing system, without having to burden Jan with more requests. He explains that “before deeploi, I would assume that we would have to deal with several hours per week handling IT issues, which is time we are saving through the deeploi ticket system.” These tickets go straight to our experienced IT support team who respond within 30 minutes.
IT for expansion
Thanks to Montamo’s training academy, business growth will continue to be a theme going forward. With deeploi, the potential for growing pains becomes far less significant. Montamo can instead focus on what’s important for them – revolutionising the crafts industry.
About Montamo
Montamo – a mix of the words “montage” and “amore” – is a startup with the vision to change craftsmanship. As an answer to the lack of skilled workers in the field, Montamo recruits prospects and trains them in handiwork over six to eight weeks, using a combination of its digital learning app and a physical academy.
It’s more than just a recruitment platform: after their tuition, Montamo employs all the newly trained workers, where they go on to fit heat pumps. This is just the starting point – the plan is that Montamo will later expand to include other products.
